Preliminaries

Mel Books said if God intended us to fly he'd have given us airline tickets. I don't like flying either, but it's something you have to do.

We are visiting China later this month and I've set up this blog to try and keep a record of of sorts of what we do there. This might be a complete waste of time because I still don't know whether or not Blogger will work in China, but we'll see. The Great Firewall of China is an awesome thing by all accounts.

Our plan is to leave Heathrow on the 16th and fly to Shanghai. After a few days in that city we'll be travelling by train down to Hangzhou and from here, by air, down to Yangshuo, a place of rivers and pointy mountains. We've decided to do this under our own steam, rather than as a tour.

So, I've bought a tablet PC for the trip and loaded it up with Chinese pronouncing dictionary apps, the visas are in place and we are (I think) about ready to go.
